This is the day the Festival of Lupercalia was celebrated In ancient Rome in honor of the she-wolf Lupa, who suckled Romulus and Remus.

Plutarch reports that part of the traditions of the day included Roman youths running through the city naked and laughing, and striking those they met with thongs.

And I think that’s beautiful.
