Artemis the Huntress is Apollo’s twin sister, and the daughter of Zeus and Leto. She is goddess of the hunt, the wilderness and wild animals. She is also a protector of women, particularly women in childbirth and young girls. Deer and hounds are her sacred animals, and she is an accomplished archer. The hound in this painting is an attempt to reconstruct the ancient Greek Laconian, a sighthound used to chase and capture game.
