The

47-foot (14.3 m) tall domed, peristyle Doric temple was designed by architect Frederick H. Brooke, himself a World War I veteran, in 1919, and completed in 1931. The circular marble base is 4 feet (1.2 m) high and 43 feet 5 inches (13.2 m) in diameter, and is inscribed the names of the 499 residents of Washington D.C.who died in service during World War I, listed in alphabetical order, without distinction made to rank, race, or gender.
