Propylaeum of the Temple of Hadrian, Termessos, Anatolia, constructed in 130 CE. to commemorate Hadrian’s visit.
Termessos is an ancient city, said to have been founded by the hero Bellerophon, which became an independent ally of Rome. Its location is a short distance from Claudiopolis (modern Bolu), where Antinous was born – which leads to the question: did Antinous visit his family in the year before his death? Did he, on this occasion, cast away his toga praexta and bulla at the family lararium, and assume the duties of adulthood before continuing his journies with Hadrian?
