Mercury sculptural relief by Franz Weiss (1903-1982). Kempten, Bavaria, Germany. Photograph by Richard Mayer.
Kempten is regarded as the oldest urban settlement in Germany. Founded by Celts, the city was rebuilt as the classical Roman Cambodunum. The modern archaeological park showcases more than a century of excavation, with a museum, reconstructions of buildings, living history, and a taberna offering modern food along with Roman fare.
Franz Weiss spent much of his career in Kempten, creating art inspired by local history for businesses, museums, schools and private homes.
